The players of FK Mladá Boleslav left for a one-week fitness training camp in Nymburk in the morning on Monday, January 7 without their skipper, Marek Matějovský. He said good-bye to them and left from Prague Ruzyně airport for London in the afternoon on the same day as he changed to the English club Reading FC, which had been monitoring the Boleslav playmaker for approximately a year. The management of the Boleslav club officially said good-bye to Matějovský at Monday’s press conference organized in a VIP lounge in Ruzyně airport.
“I am very satisfied with what has come off,“ said Matějovský about his new contract, which he takes as a huge challenge. He has passed the corresponding medical and fitness tests successfully in Reading in recent days. He openly expressed his thanks to the president of FK Mladá Boleslav, Josef Dufek, and to the football agents Zíka and Kolář from Sport Invest, who cooperated in the preparation of the three and a half year-long contract for Matějovský at the press conference.
”We will not publish the precise sum but the agreed upon sum is adequate to the quality of the best player of the Gambrinus League and a Czech international player,“ said Josef Dufek, who presented Matějovský with lifelong tickets for two persons to football matches in Mladá Boleslav. “Marek started to play football in Mladá Boleslav and certainly is a big example for all young football players from Mladá Boleslav and the whole Pojizeří region."
Before Marek Matějovský took his luggage and got on board the plane, he answered several questions from journalists. Do you already know where will you be staying in Reading?
“I have already selected housing and that is why my whole family is coming with me. I agreed with the first offer of a very luxury flat, the owner of which is a big fan of Reading who offered to help me with everything. It will be no problem in the future to select some house where my small son could play in the garden when necessary.“
Do you speak some English?
“I know basic English and I am ready to learn English so as to join in and to be useful for the team as soon as possible.“
Are you not afraid of the fact that the English season is fully running and you have only had a rest period and have not trained in recent weeks?
“The Christmas break was not so long that I could not get into necessary shape even if I do not expect to play in the basic squad from the very beginning. However, it is possible that I will get the first opportunity in the upcoming days in a cup match.“
Were you surprised by anything during the tests that you had to pass?
“I was in a fitness facility, they tested my bounce force, impetuousness, muscle structure, I passed standard jogging with heart rate monitoring, they took my blood and examined all my properties necessary for playing football. I spent a lot of time in hospital and must admit that I have not passed such examination yet. It was really demanding and I am not really surprised that the results of such tests have ruined contracts in an English club for some players.”
Are you aware of the fact that you are joining the team where Hunt, who split open the skull of goalkeeper Čech plays?
“Hunt was the first name that came to me in connection with Reading but everybody who knows him says that he is a nice guy and that Čech’s injury was an unhappy situation. So I am sure I’ll get along well with Hunt.“
Are not you afraid of the fact that you are moving to a league where duels are much fiercer than in the domestic league?
“I know that I am moving to different football and I will try to adapt to it. I do not see any reason why I should not handle it when I want to play there and I look forward to it.“
Did you manage to say good-bye to your Boleslav team-mates?
“I visited them in the dressing room on the day of their departure for a training camp in Nymburk and my departure for England. They wished me good luck. I have several shirts from both Czech league and international matches reminding me of my years with Mladá Boleslav.“
Do you know which number will you play in Reading?
“It seems that I will have the number twenty-eight.”
Did you consult your transfer to the English club with the head-coach of the national team?
“I did not consult the transfer to the English club with the head-coach of the national team. If I wish to play in the European Championship, I must prove to both myself and the head-coach that I am able to play against much more significant competition than in the Czech league.“
Have you already spoken to the head-coach Coppell about he expects from you and where he will rely on you?
“The head-coach told me that they had monitored me for almost a year and bought me for three and a half years, which is evidence of the fact that my contract is no coincidence and that he believes I will adapt as soon as possible and to be useful for the team.“
