Mladá Boleslav will meet French Olympique Marseille in the first round of the UEFA Cup. Djibril Cisse and Franck Ribery are the biggest current stars of the team. The first match will take place in Marseille on September 14 and the return match in Mladá Boleslav on September 28. Mladá Boleslav was in the fifth basket among the unseeded five teams. The defending winner of the UEFA CUP Sevilla, Marseille, Besiktas, Heerenveen and Grasshoppers were potential rivals that could be drawn. „Whoever else but not Besiktas, we were in Turkey already, but it does not matter otherwise," said the head-coach of Mladá Boleslav Dušan Uhrin before drawing. The football God has heard his wish and sent the Mladá Boleslav team in the quite opposite end of Europe.
Drawing took place in Monaco on Friday, August 25 shortly after noon and the names of eighty European clubs divided into ten drawing groups with five seeded and five unseeded teams were put in the wheel of fortune. Mladá Boleslav was the only unseeded club of four Czech participants whereas Sparta, Slavia and Liberec were among those seeded. September 14 and 28 were fixed as the terms for the first round. The qualifying teams will be divided by draw in eight five-team groups that will be played using a single-round system for three qualifying places in the next stage of the UEFA Cup. As to the other Czech participants of the UEFA Cup, Sparta Prague will play against Hearts of Midlothain with ex-Boleslav striker Roman Bednář, Slovan Liberec against CZ Beograd and Slavia Prague against Tottenham Hotspurs.
